Why the U.S. Brought Back Kilmar Abrego Garcia

Kilmar Abrego Garcia, who was mistakenly deported to El Salvador, was flown back to the United States on Friday to face federal criminal charges. Devlin Barrett, who covers the Justice Department, explains the charges and what may come next for Garcia.

After being wrongfully deported in March, 29-year-old Kilmar Ábrego García of El Salvador has been brought back to the United States to face two federal criminal charges.

Over a number of years, he has been charged with taking part in a trafficking conspiracy to transport unauthorized workers from Texas to other regions of the nation.

After the United States presented El Salvador with an arrest warrant, El Salvador consented to free Mr. Ábrego García, US Attorney General Pam Bondi announced on Friday. The charges were deemed “preposterous” by his attorney.

After he and more than 250 other deportees were taken to a jail in El Salvador, the White House had been fighting a US Supreme Court decision from April to “facilitate” his repatriation.
