Understanding Measles: Causes, Symptoms, Treatments, and Health Implications Measles, a highly contagious viral infection, has been a subject of concern in public health discussions for decades. Despite the availability of vaccines that have significantly reduced its prevalence, outbreaks still occur, highlighting the importance of awareness around this disease. In this article, we’ll delve into the causes of measles, its symptoms, available treatments, and its wider health implications. What Causes Measles? Measles is caused by the measles virus, a member of the Paramyxoviridae family. This virus spreads primarily through respiratory droplets when an infected person coughs or sneezes. Remarkably, it can remain infectious on surfaces for up to two hours, making it one of the most contagious viruses known. The key factor that influences susceptibility to measles is vaccination. The measles-mumps-rubella (MMR) vaccine is highly effective, offering about 97% protection against the virus after two doses.
