In the video for “To Be Free,” the exhilarating new single by Sam Smith, the artist spearheads what can only be termed a vibrant revolution. While Sam performs on stage in a vacant theater, the lobby suddenly bursts with lively young people who dance across the bar as they make their way to fill the auditorium. As Sam’s voice harmonizes with a powerful chorus, the audience is captured singing along, their faces radiating pure joy as they shed their inhibitions.
In the press release for the song, Smith shares, “I’ve never had a recording experience like I did making this song. It’s one vocal and guitar take from start to finish – one live performance of me and my friend Simon Aldred in a pure state of music and expression. I wrote it five years ago while working on my last album Gloria and then set it aside because I realized it wasn’t meant for that album. It was born during a period in my life when I found freedom within myself.”
Although Sam has not yet revealed a larger project linked to the single, which is their first solo track since the Barbie soundtrack, they do have a 12-date residency scheduled at the historic Brooklyn venue Warsaw. Tickets will be available for purchase on Friday, August 1, at 10 am local time. More information can be found here.
