Measles is caused by the measles virus, a member of the Paramyxoviridae family. This virus spreads primarily through respiratory droplets when an infected person coughs or sneezes. Remarkably, it can remain infectious on surfaces for up to two hours, making it one of the most contagious viruses known. The key factor that influences susceptibility to measles is vaccination.
